Willem de Vlamingh (1640-1698) was a seafarer and explorer born on Vlieland who sailed along the inhospitable West Australian coast on behalf of the VOC. He had been sent on a rescue mission in the southern waters with the frigate Geelvinck.

After a visit to the Cape of Good Hope nothing more was heard of the ship Ridderschap van Holland with 325 persons on board.

On Dirck Hartogh Island he found a pewter plate with an inscription that Dirck Hartogh had left here in 1616. De Vlamingh took the badly damaged plate with him to Batavia, from where it was sent to Holland.

It is now part of the Rijksmuseum collection: it is considered the oldest tangible proof of European presence on the Australian continent.

At the third centenary of De Vlamingh's discovery - in 1997 - HRH Prince Willem Alexander unveiled a statue of Willem De Vlamingh at the mouth of the Swan River.

The Australian government offered replicas of the dishes by Dirk Hartog and Willem de Vlamingh to the Dutch people. Both were received by Her Majesty's Ambassador to Australia.

At the request of museum Tromp's Huys, the latter donated the replica of De Vlamingh's dish to the museum, where it can now be admired.
